A file has been sent to the Laois Coroner following the death of a man in Portarlington earlier this week.

Laois Gardaí confirmed they recovered the body of a male from a disused quarry off the Lea Road in Portarlington on Monday, July 30.

It’s understood the man, who was in his mid 20s and from Dublin, got into difficulty at the quarry and drowned at around lunchtime on Monday.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and the man’s body was recovered from the water by the Garda Water Unit before being taken to hospital.

Gardaí  have investigated the matter and the incident has now been referred to the Coroner.

The tragedy occurred as water safety groups issued warnings in relation to people entering the water over the Bank Holiday weekend.
