Woman allegedly tried to smuggle iPhone into Portlaoise Prison in underwear

Portlaoise Prison

A woman appeared in court accused of smuggling an iPhone into Portlaoise Prison in her underwear.

Margaret O’Connor (64) of 12 Church Street, Tipperary town, appeared in court accused of conveying an iPhone and charging cable into Portlaoise Prison on January 7, 2026.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said it would be alleged the woman was stopped “attempting to bring a mobile phone” into Portlaoise Prison at 10.15am on the date in question. It is alleged the phone and charging cable were concealed in her undergarments, he said.

Andrew Dunne BL requested disclosure in the case. He said the woman was in receipt of disability allowance and he asked for legal aid.

Judge Susan Fay accepted jurisdiction, granted legal aid and adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on February 16 for a plea or a date for hearing.
