In the midst of all the madness with the weather this week, the Grand Marshals of the Portlaoise St Patrick's Day parade have been announced.

The organising committee announced the news with a statement.

"We are delighted to announce, our 2018 Grand Marshal.

"The students of St. Francis School, Portlaoise will be honouring us as Grand Marshal this year.

"We are delighted to have them with us and we are looking forward to having them in our parade.

"Special word of thanks to the staff of St. Francis School and their Principal, Malachy Mc Nulty."

Congratulations to all of the students at St. Francis School, Portlaoise.

This is great news for the parade which was almost not going to go ahead this year.

The parade was cancelled for a number of days before it was saved by local businesses and contributers.

The parade is now looking for sports clubs and community groups to take part in the parade.

Anyone who wants to take part can email portlaoisepdp@gmail.com for more information.
