A Laois TD revealed the owners of a major former shopping outlet building in Rathdowney had unsuccessfully enquired about turning it into an IPAS centre.

Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming was speaking during a public meeting which had been called by Durrow Community Council in relation to plans for two proposed  International Protection Accommodation Service(IPAS) centres in the village.

“The owners of the Brand Central, that building in Rathdowney, wanted to go this route a short while ago and they enquired off Laois County Council and they enquired off IPAS in Dublin,” he revealed.

“Laois County Council said that scale of a development in Rathdowney would not be good development. And that was the end of it. They didn’t even put in the planning,” he told the gathering.

The 109,000 sq foot Brand Central property on the Johnstown Road in Rathdowney is located on a 13 acre site and has parking for 650 cars. It is currently on the market with a guide price of €7.2million.

Brand Central's Bernie Moloney  said “that was a long time ago. That was when the Ukrainians were coming into Ireland.”

She said the shopping centre is on the market and was being sold by Clement Herron. She said there has been lots of interest.

Ms Moloney said discussions about a primary health centre have been ongoing at the centre for a long time.
