Great news for Laois town as site purchased for new library

Rathdowney Library will be relocated to a prime location in the town
A Laois town is set to get a new library as a site has been purchased by Laois County Council for the development.
A historical building in the Square in Rathdowney has been acquired by Laois County Council for the development of a new library.
The current library on Mill Street will relocate to the two-storey building in the Square, which previously served as the Area Office for Laois County Council in Rathdowney and a Garda Station.
Local councillor John King has welcomed the news, saying “it’s a good day for Rathdowney.”
Speaking at the recent meeting of Laois County Council, Cllr King said: “I want to welcome the purchase of this building in the Square in Rathdowney.
“This premises has served Rathdowney town through the years. First it was an RIC building back in the 1800s, later it was a garda station, then it became a veterinary clinic and council office.”
He noted that the existing library has served Rathdowney well throughout the years, however problems with parking and other issues means it may not be suitable going forward.
Cllr King told the council: “There was a time you’d just go in and borrow a book but now modern libraries are a focal point for the people to meet. I look forward to the future of this new library in Rathdowney.”
Looking ahead, the Rathdowney councillor said that the next step to be taken is to apply for funding and he requested that Laois County Council advance the plans for the design of the new library.
The council said it supports progressing the plans for the design of the new library facility, adding that “the development of a modern and accessible library in a central location will represent a valuable cultural and community asset for Rathdowney and the surrounding area.”
Subject to available funding, the council proposed that the preliminary feasibility study for design considerations be advanced in order to establish the scope and requirements as well as delivery options for the project.
An application will be made for EU Just Transition funding which will also assist in identifying other suitable funding opportunities, including potential national library capital funding streams.
The council reiterated that advancing the project will be contingent on securing funding.
