Ladies’ rugby gala coming to Portlaoise Rugby Club

Portlaoise RFC grounds at Togher will be buzzing on Thursday, February 19, after the club was awarded the fourth round of this season’s Sarah Robinson Cup for its excellent facilities.

The games between the North Midlands and Midlands; and the South East v Metro both kick off at 12pm.

The Sarah Robinson Cup is Leinster Rugby’s Area Representative Competition for Under-17 Girls. This forms the first step for female players working towards Leinster and Ireland Under-18 Girls sides.

This season the North Midlands Area (Laois and Kildare) has been very lucky with an excellent group of players from girls teams in the clubs and schools across the area with Portlaoise RFC and Portarlington RFC well represented.

The girls sit top of the table going into round four and a win in the game versus the Midlands Area will guarantee them the Sarah Robinson Cup for this season.

"We’d really like to make as much of an event as possible out of the games in Portlaoise RFC and thought it would be great to have the Minis Girls involved on the day, and let them see first-hand what they can aspire to be in the coming years," said a spokesperson for the North Midlands.

The idea would be to run a Minis Girls Blitz in Portlaoise that day also, possibly just U/12 girls, and in addition to their normal games, the Minis Girls will perform a guard of honour with Leinster flags, for the Sarah Robinson Cup players as they come out from their dressing rooms at the start of their games and also play half-time games on the match pitches in those Sarah Robinson Cup games.
