Timahoe schoolkids brush up on their Irish and help out a Laois charity in the process

There was plenty of ‘tae agus cáca milis’ at a Laois school just before the Halloween break, when Scoil Mhuire Fatima NS in Timahoe held their popular annual family fundraiser.

There was a wonderful atmosphere in the school halla on Friday, 21st October, as the staff and children hosted their annual Café Gaeilge in aid of Laois Hospice.

The event provided the ideal opportunity for pupils to put their Irish language skills into practice in a relaxed and welcoming setting, while also raising funds for a very worthy local charity.

The children had been busy at home baking a delicious selection of treats, which they proudly served to parents and grandparents who joined them for the occasion.

With Gaeilge at the heart of the afternoon, the pupils enthusiastically used their Irish phrases to welcome visitors, take orders and chat with those who came along to support the event.

The principal Michael McEvoy told the Leinster Express more about the day.

“The Café Gaeilge is a wonderful celebration of the Irish language, demonstrating how Gaeilge can be brought to life through everyday conversations and enjoyable shared experiences.

"It was also a lovely example of the school community coming together to support Laois Hospice.

“It was particularly lovely to see the school hall filled with parents, grandparents and members of the school community, all enjoying the delicious home baking and the opportunity to support a great cause," the principal said.

On behalf of Scoil Mhuire Fatima, he extends a heartfelt thank you to all the families who baked, to everyone who attended and those who made such generous donations.

They say that all of the support was greatly appreciated and helped make the afternoon a success.

The morning raised a total of €254.45 for the charity.

Laois Hospice Foundation helps to provide a palliative home care service for patients whose illness no longer responds to curative treatment.

The Hospice also provides support for the families of such patients.

This total care involves doctors, nurses, a team of specialists and the clergy, who are all concerned with quality of life.

The volunteer run Laois charity relies solely on the generosity of the general public to sustain their services, which include home care visits by medical professionals, and a bereavement service.
