Laois TDs have been invited to a public meeting over school bus places for children around Emo and The Rock.

A parents group in the area plans to hold a public meeting in Emo Community Centre on Thursday, September 7. They have called the meeting in response to children missing out on school bus places despite having secured seats last year.

Minister of State, Sean Fleming, Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan and Sinn Fein TD Brian Stanley all got an email inviting them to attend the public meeting.

“The parents wish to hold a public meeting to discuss the lack of bus seats for their children. As you know, there are now at least seven pupils with no seats on post-primary school bus route from Emo/The Rock to Mountmellick Community School The parents involved invite you to attend, as you are our local Laois TD's. The parents are inviting all local families and the local press to this meeting also,” the email states.

“The families concerned were approved and had bus seats for their children last year, on this new service,” the group previously said.

They want Minister for Education, Norma Foley to revise established criteria in this case to resolve the situation and to ensure it is not repeated. They also asked that students who attain a bus ticket in their first year have it for the duration of their secondary school education.

“There is a strong case for an additional bus service or bigger sized bus to be added - to cater for the children seeking to attend Mountmellick Community School,” they said.

"You have to remember that these same families along with 27 other local families, went public last year - to fight an arduous yet successful campaign to get the school bus route (Emo/The Rock rural villages to Mountmellick) re-established, after over 20 years of no service on this route," a group spokesperson claimed.

They say the school bus  service has taken 100 daily car journeys off the Emo Mountmellick Road.
