Portlaoise College's Transition Year are going ‘Back to the 80’s’ with a new show.

The Cast of Back to the 80's

Portlaoise College, proudly sponsored by Martley’s of Portlaoise, will be hosting their TY musical ‘Back to the 80’s’ when it takes to the stage in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on  March 12 and 13.

Building on the music department's success of last year’s production of ‘We Will Rock You’. ‘Back to the 80’s’ showcases hit songs such as ‘Video Killed the Radio Star,’ ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ ‘Footloose’ and  ‘The Time of My Life.’

‘Back to the 80’s’ is a pop culture trip down memory lane, telling the story of Corey Palmer and his senior year of high school: his best friends, the class bully, and the girl he loves. In the present day, Corey takes us back to William Ocean High School, watching himself and his friends Kirk and Alf start their bid to be senior class president and vice presidents, only to have the opportunity stolen by bully Michael Feldman. To make Corey’s life worse, Michael has also stolen away Tiffany Houston, Corey’s longtime crush. ’Back to the 80’s’ is a non-stop collection of music, movie and TV Easter Eggs for all ages.

The Transition Year students have been working tirelessly since September to get the show off the ground.

“It has allowed so many students to perform with all Transition Year students being involved in the production of the show,” explained Musical Director James Harvey.

“The students have really enjoyed putting the show together while having their say in how they might best portray their characters, delivering the best show they can,” he said.

A huge credit must go to all the students and staff that have made this show possible. There is great excitement and buzz around the school in anticipation of the show.

The Show will take place on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13 at  7.30 pm with a matinee performance for primary schools on Wednesday, March 13 at 10.30 am.
