It was a proud day for Shanahoe National School in Laois when they got to perform two pieces for the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins at the 2024 National Ploughing Championships.

The Scoil Fionntáin Naofa children played their accordians, tin whistles and drums brilliantly for the Presidential Salute and the National Anthem, despite suffering the hot sun and long speeches in their capes and hats.

The school band is made up of all the children from 1st to 6th class, and even some graduates, as teacher Chris Cahill told the Leinster Express / Laois Live as they waited to perform.

"We have been practicing hard, starting last June for this. Some of last year's 6th class came back to play.

"It's a great honour for the school, it's really nice," she said.
