Laois secondary school hosts series of successful open evenings

Dunamase College / Coláiste Dhún Másc recently welcomed prospective students and their families to explore the school and meet with staff, students, and parents at their open evenings.

The evenings began with a warm welcome from Principal Dympna Kelly, who emphasised the school's dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive community for all students. Deputy Principal Clár Nic Gearailt shared the school's vision and highlighted the key role of the core values—respect, care, equality, community, and excellence in education.

The school management team discussed the use of technology in education, the central role of the Irish language within the school, and the wide range of clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities available.

They also stressed the importance of student voice in the school's ongoing development, a message echoed by both management and students.

"Current students Grace, Jamie, and Róisin shared how Dunamase College has supported their academic and personal growth through opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities like sports, clubs, and student leadership roles," Principal Kelly told the Leinster Express/Laois Live.

"Past pupil Cillian also spoke, sharing how the school had a profound impact on his development. He emphasised the importance of technology in preparing him for life beyond school and noted the school’s promotion of student voice, referencing his active role in the Student Council and Green Schools initiatives," she said.

"Cillian highly commended the school's dedication to equipping students with the tools they need as they transition into further education and life beyond the classroom."

The architectural designs for a new 1,000 pupil building for Dunamase College / Coláiste Dhún Masc have been made public. The school is the only Laois secondary school teaching through Irish or English, and will be built in Portlaoise, accessed off the Well (Timahoe) Road.

After the principal’s address, attendees enjoyed tours of the facilities, interacting with students and teachers, and learning about the school's diverse academic offerings and extracurricular programs.

Visitors were invited to participate in a range of interactive activities and gained insight into the significant role of technology in enhancing the learning experience at the school. Many attendees complimented the modern facilities, the students' enthusiasm, and the overall welcoming atmosphere, which offered a glimpse into the vibrant school community.

"The Open Evening was a tremendous success, showcasing the school’s strong sense of community, innovation, and dedication to student growth, leaving both parents and prospective students excited about the future opportunities that Dunamase College / Coláiste Dhún Másc has to offer," Ms Kelly finished.
