In a heartwarming display of unity, sport, and inclusion, a Laois school has hosted its first ever inclusive soccer blitz to mark Autism Awareness Week 2025.
Four schools across Laois and Tipperary took part in the event, with teams from Heywood Community School, Thurles CBS, and Portlaoise College joining Mountrath in a celebration that went far beyond the final score.
Mountrath Community School proudly hosted the event on Thursday April 3, marking a memorable highlight this year's Autism Awareness Week.
The event took place on the school's brand new state-of-the-art astro turf, which provided the perfect setting for a day filled with energy, enthusiasm, and camaraderie.
"The Inclusive Soccer Blitz was designed to promote participation, friendship, and understanding among students of all abilities, with a special focus on neurodiverse students," Mountrath Community School told the Leinster Express/Laois Live.
"The atmosphere was electric from the first whistle, with players showing incredible teamwork, determination, and most importantly—joy.
"Staff, students, and supporters cheered from the sidelines, proud to witness an initiative that not only celebrated Autism Awareness Week but also underscored the power of sport to bring people together.
"The matches were competitive yet friendly, with plenty of goals, high-fives, and moments of sporting brilliance shared between schools," a teacher said.
Mountrath Community School’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) department played a key role in organizing the event, ensuring it was accessible and welcoming for all participants.
Teachers and SNAs from all schools involved were full of praise for the initiative, recognising the value of inclusive sport in building confidence and creating lasting memories.
"As Autism Awareness Week continues, the Inclusive Soccer Blitz has already left its mark—showing that when communities come together in kindness and support, amazing things can happen both on and off the pitch," the school praised.
"Plans are already being discussed to make this an annual event, with hopes that even more schools will take part in the future. Based on Thursday’s success, the future for inclusive sport in the region looks very bright indeed," they finished.
