The road works will take place on the N80, Pearse Street
There will be some temporary traffic disruptions over the coming weeks in Mountmellick due to long awaited safety works finally commencing outside St Paul's National School.
Road works began this Wednesday morning, 7 January on the N80, Pearse Street after €50,000 in funding was awarded to the school under the Safe Routes to Schools Programme in February 2O24.
The school zone safety works had been continuously delayed despite their demand, with Mountmellick Counsellor Paddy Bracken repeatedly raising the issue with Laois County Council.
As the road works involved a National Secondary road, Transport Infrastructure Ireland needed to give consent for the works to be carried out.

Laois County Council have said that temporary traffic management arrangements will remain in place until Friday, 23 January.
The road works will stretch from Mountmellick Fire Station to just past St Paul's National School on Pearse Street.
Locals are advised that the temporary traffic management arrangements will operate between 8am and 6pm.
Cllr Paddy Bracken has welcomed the commencement of the works on the busy road which he described as being "in a bad way."
Cllr Bracken said: "It's good to get it done. I had been pushing for it so it's great to see it happen."
