Sinn Féin's letter to gardaí about issues which led to the resignation of Laois Offaly TD Brian Stanley contain text messages about the allegations, RTÉ News has reported.

Crime reporter Paul Reynolds has reported that the material also states that the alleged incident which led to the initial complaint refers to an incident on October 11 last year and that the counter-allegation relates to an alleged incident two days later on October 13.

RTÉ also reports that Gardaí are still trying to confirm they have received the letter as Sinn Féin delivered it to Kevin Street Garda Station in Dublin on Sunday afternoon just hours after Dep Stanley resigned from the party claiming he was the victim of a Kangaroo court.

It's reported that SF confirmed the letter was handed in at the public office by a barrister without comment.  RTÉ reports that a cover letter states that "enclosed" are "details of a complaint" made against TD Brian Stanley and that the "enclosed copies" of text messages "shared" between the two parties. SF has referred the initial complaint and a counter-allegation by Mr Stanley to the gardaí.

The cover letter also states that "there may be issues that present possibilities for further investigation by An Garda Síochána".

Gardaí will assess the letter and the material enclosed to determine if they need to commence an investigation.

Gardaí said they would not comment directly on investigations involving named individuals or organisations. A Garda spokesperson told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that referrals to to the force are initially examined to determine whether they meet the threshold for a potential criminal offence before any criminal investigation is launched.
