Mountmellick United
Mountmellick United has reached a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to enhance local sports facilities, with planning permission granted for the redevelopment of Smith’s Field into a multi-purpose community sports ground.
The announcement, made by Laois County Council on Monday, March 3, marks a significant step forward for the Mountmellick club after years of dedication and planning by its committee.
The approved development includes a full-sized Astro-turf playing pitch, walking tracks, pathways, associated groundworks, and floodlighting. The project will not only improve sporting facilities but also provide a crucial link between two sides of the town, making it easier for residents to navigate between The Harbour and the Tullamore Road.
This achievement has been years in the making, with various club committees working towards the goal of expanding playing facilities. Since relocating to Conor Davis Park in 2004, Mountmellick United has continued to grow, now catering to 21 teams ranging from five-year-old academy players to senior men’s and ladies’ squads. The increasing demand for playing space has made securing additional facilities a top priority.
The redevelopment journey began in October 2023, when the club enlisted Michael McGrath of Insight Architects to draft a feasibility plan. The next step was securing a long-term lease for Smith’s Field from the parish, which was made possible with the support of parish priest Fr. Michael Murphy PP.

One of the key challenges involved addressing the impact on the area's flora and fauna, given Smith’s Field’s proximity to the Owenass River. A biodiversity and ecological planning specialist was consulted, and the project received high praise for its potential to enhance the local environment rather than harm it.
The application was then submitted to Laois County Council, which approved the plans this. The council had already been exploring ways to improve connectivity within the town, and this development will play a vital role in creating a much-needed pedestrian link between key areas.
The benefits of this project extend well beyond Mountmellick United. The all-weather pitch will be available for use by local sports clubs, while community groups and individuals will also be welcome to take advantage of the walking tracks and recreational facilities. This initiative aims to provide a safe and accessible space for walkers, runners, and various community events.
While planning approval is a huge step forward, the project now enters the crucial fundraising phase. Mountmellick United will be organising fundraising events and seeking government and Sports Ireland assistance to bring this vision to life. The club is calling on the community to support the project, ensuring that within the next 12 to 18 months, Smith’s Field transforms from an ambitious plan into a thriving recreational hub for all.
