Laois Hurlers Golf Society kicks-off next weekend

While most keen golfers will be keeping their eye on the Master’s tournament in Augusta this week, the Laois Hurlers Golf Society is back from next weekend, Saturday 20th April, for the first of their three outings that the Society stage this year.

Their first event will take place in Rathdowney Golf Club on Saturday next .The three-man team event is a running tradition in Laois having been initiated back in the late eighties and features a host of former Laois greats.

Following on from their opening event in Rathdowney Golf Club, their Captain’s Prize takes place in late summer and they conclude with a Hamper Outing on the October Bank Holiday weekend.

The most sought-after prize within the society is the Ollie Fennell Trophy in honour of the Clonad and Laois legend who was a long-time member, it is awarded to the player with the best overall score over a selected number of outings.

Members of the society, who have represented Laois at Inter County level, also have the opportunity of participating in All Ireland Hurlers events run by the Na hIomanaithe Society. They stage a Captains Prize, Christy Ring Trophy, with the highlight of the season an Inter County team event in early September.

The Society has grown in popularity since its inception in 1988 offering an ideal opportunity for members to renew old acquaintances and cement friendships born on the hurling fields of the past.

To become a member, golfers just need to have played hurling at any level but must be a current member of a golf club and hold a GUI handicap. Annual membership is €20 and each outing cost €20.

The Society invites members, current and new, to Rathdowney on the 20th. First tee is reserved from 0850 to 1030, with Portlaoise man and well-known referee Brochan O’Reilly the Captain for 2019. Sadly, there will be one notable absentee on Saturday next, Finty Kealy, following his recent passing – a great supporter of the Society that will be fondly remembered.
