Portlaoise Tradfest launch
Portlaoise is set to come alive to the sound of traditional music when an exciting new music festival gets underway this May Bank Holiday weekend.
“We are hosting many events such as concerts, music sessions in various pubs and music classes here in the town,” explained one of the organisers, Daly McKay.
The festival will kick off with a Gala Concert featuring one of Ireland’s best known traditional singers Sean Keane, who will perform in the Dunamase Arts Centre together with the Music Generation Laois Trad Orchestra on Friday, April 28 at 7pm.
The evening will continue with sessions in Bergins Bar and a session trail to a number of bars in Portlaoise from 9.30pm.
On Saturday, April 29 there will be workshops in various traditional instruments and singing from 11am to 2pm. A youth/beginner session from 2.30 to 4.30pm and a session trail from 5pm to 9pm. At 9.30pm Festival Club will take place. Venues throughout Portlaoise are hosting big names from the traditional music scene over the weekend which promises to be lively an entertaining.
Talks are ongoing about possible street performers and buskers during the festival over the May Bank Holiday. Organisers are promising an action packed festival but require help to make it happen.
“We are looking for any donations/sponsorships no matter how big or small. This donation will go towards creating a website, posters, logo, artwork design, advertisement, paying teachers and any unforeseen costs,” said Dale.
“This donation would go a long way in paying for the initial start-up costs of Portlaoise Tradfest. If you donate we will mention you across all social media, we will mention you on all our posters and mention you in all speeches made across the weekend. If you would like to donate and help us in this venture email us at portlaoisetradfest@gmail.com or call 083 1040114,” he said.
Further details of the first Portlaoise Tradfest are available on Portlaoisetradfest.com or on the Portlaoise Tradfest Facebook page.
