A Laois dog rescue charity has closed its doors to taking in any more unwanted dogs.
Cara Rescue Dogs, based in Mountmellick made their announcement on Friday, January 13.
They say they have been overwhelmed with dogs due to the surge in pets taken on by owners during the Covid pandemic.
"For the first time, since Cara Rescue Dogs was set up 12 years ago... We are more than heartbroken to tell you our doors are Closed.
"The main reason being the amount of people looking to rehome dogs/pups they got between 2020/21 (Covid dogs)
"Most were not neutered which is now resulting in ample litters of unwanted pups, pregnant dogs, every type of breed.
"As Cara is a Foster home only based rescue (we dont have a base/kennels) we depend solely on individual Foster homes.
"These fosters are now exhausted, some still doing their best, others no longer able for it.
"So we sourced boarding kennels to help us with the overflow. Fantastic boarding kennels, our dogs are walked daily and get social interaction both human and canine. But the cost is crippling. We can't sustain it. We simply have no Foster space left, and no funds to continue using kennels.
"That's the bones of why we have had to make the hard decision to close our doors.
"In the past week alone we have had to say no to tiny pups, pregnant dogs and an injured pound dog.
"This makes us sick to our stomach. It's not right. We have never said No. We always found a way. but right now we are submerged, with no other choice.
"We can only continue to offer the best care possible to the 55 dogs and pups in our care at this present time until we find them forever homes".
They are pleading for donations to cover kennel costs.
"If you want to try help us get back on our feet, you can firstly share this plea. We are appealing for help to cover kennel and vetcare costs. Our PayPal link is https://www.paypal.me/CaraRescueDogs. Our Revlout is revolut.me/lorraia0u7. If you want to set up a monthly subscription please pm us for details, even €5 a month is hugely appreciated."
Foster homes are urgently needed say Cara Rescue Dogs.
"We need foster homes. Please contact caradogsfoster@hotmail.com to complete our foster application. We supply food and cover vetcare. We are praying this closure will be temporary, how long for is in the hands of the general public. We will be posting up the dogs we need to rehome and ask you to please share for us.. Thank you for reading x"
