Vital daffodil volunteers in Laois town raise huge sum for cancer care

Volunteers needed for Daffodil Day in Naas

Mountrath woman Margaret O'Brien has given more than 30 years to Daffodil Day.

Spring daffodils have long since faded but the vital voluntary work done in Mountrath and local generosity on Daffodil Day is sure to leave a lasting impact on cancer care.

The organisers of Daffodil Day in the Laois town wish to thank everybody who so generously supported them on Daffodil Day which took place on March 24.

They extended a special thanks to all who gave fresh daffodils and person donations.

They are also grateful to Centra, Spar and Mace stores who welcomed the collectors. They also extended a special thanks to the many helpers who gave of their time to help with the collection.

The revealed that all of this volunteerism resulted in donations saw an astonishing €9,298 raised to help the Irish Cancer Society help people around Ireland.

"Thanks again for your generous support," say the organisers.

Among the volunteers in Mountrath is Margaret O'Brien who has collected on Daffodil Day, year after year, rain or shine for over three decades. 

On top of supporting life-changing cancer research, the Irish Cancer Society used funds raised in Mountrath and elsewhere to provide vital services to patients and their families in Laois each year. The support includes over 350 counselling sessions, over 160 nights of in-home Night Nursing for patients in their final days, and over 280 Volunteer Driving lifts to get patients safely to and from their hospital appointments in 2021.

As Daffodil Day returned to the streets of Ireland for the first time since 2019 on March 25, 2023.
