The December meeting of the Laois branch of the Irish Farmers Association represented a special night in that it honoured the work of local man Michael Bergin.
The IFA President Tim Cullinan, who will soon pass the reins to Francie Gorman, travelled to Laois to bestow an Honorary Life Membership on the Mountrath IFA Branch member in Portlaoise.
The IFA National Council confers Honorary Life Membership on any person who they believe has rendered outstanding service to the Association.
The association said afterwards that Mr Bergin was awarded Life Membership for his “outstanding commitment, dedication, contribution and loyalty to IFA both at a local and national level”.
The IFA said that Michael was to the fore of the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) campaign within the county.
He also served as Laois IFA County Chairman and was the National Chairman of the IFA National Rural Development Committee.
He also served on the Farm Business Committee and was instrumental in organising Leader Programme funding for projects within the county through his chairmanship of Laois Partnership.
