The 'Greener Together' initiative is a pioneering monthly newsletter dedicated to supporting the Portlaoise Low Carbon Town Project (PLCTP) and fostering collaboration between public and private organizations committed to sustainability.
Cllr Padraig Fleming, Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, introduced the initiative, stating: "Greener Together reflects our deep commitment to sustainability and our belief that by working together, we can achieve remarkable results."
Simon Walton, Chief Executive of Laois County Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative. "This newsletter is a fantastic way to showcase the hard work being done across the county. It’s about sharing knowledge and encouraging everyone to contribute to our sustainability goals."
Suzanne Dempsey, Climate Action Coordinator, emphasized the importance of community involvement.
"Greener Together is a partnership with local public and private organizations, and we will support you in your sustainability journey. Engaging with our residents and businesses is crucial for the success of our climate action plans."
The newsletter will spotlight the contributions of local organizations and businesses leading the way in sustainability. For example, readers can learn about the Midlands Park Hotel's volunteer day to remove Himalayan Balsam in Linear Park, and the Laois Education Centre's creation of a Biodiversity Garden.
Lisa Doyle, Climate Action Officer, added: "We welcome more organizations to join our new initiative. Email greenertogether@laoiscoco.ie to sign up. Practical tips and success stories featured in 'Greener Together' can help individuals and families make greener choices in their daily lives."
The launch event saw attendance from various local organizations committed to sustainability. Laois Volunteers, known for organizing CSR events for local businesses, were among the prominent attendees. Other notable participants included IPS, HSE, Laois Chamber Alliance, Greenfield Global, Mochua Print, the Department of Agriculture, and the Midlands Park Hotel, each showcasing their ongoing sustainability efforts and initiatives.
Additionally, the event highlighted numerous training opportunities for individuals and organizations aimed at enhancing their sustainability practices. The Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) presented a range of courses designed to equip participants with the skills needed for effective climate action.
Laois Education Centre showcased their educational programs focused on environmental awareness and biodiversity. The Cube and the Laois Local Enterprise Centre also provided insights into their support programs, aimed at helping local businesses integrate sustainable practices into their operations.
"I urge everyone to subscribe to 'Greener Together' and take advantage of the wealth of information it offers. Together, we will continue to build a sustainable future, one step at a time", concluded Cllr Fleming.
