Over €783,172 has been awarded to 11 community centres in Laois through the Community Centre Investment Fund.
Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary TD announced this fund today, which will oversee the modernising of community centres in local towns and villages.
Welcoming the announcement of funding under the 2024 Community Centre Investment Fund today,
William Aird, TD said the funding will help community centres across County Laois to carry out building renovations and enhance amenities.
Deputy Aird said this funding will result in community facilities being more sustainable and accessible, so that they can be enjoyed by all.
“I am delighted to see funding of €783,172 for community centres in Laois. I want to thank the volunteers who work so hard to facilitate activities in our community centres," Deputy Aird said.
“Community centres play an essential role in bringing our communities together. Whether it’s local meetings, celebrations, or classes for children or retired people, our community centres in Laois have always been a central point in every town and village for people to come together.

“Communities across Laois, from Clonaslee to Clonad, from Rathdonwey to Mountmellick, from Portarlington to Killeshin will now be empowered to make the changes they need to their community centres to ensure they are up to a high standard.
“Nationwide this funding will be used for a range of measures such as roof and insulation enhancements; others
will see kitchen and toilet upgrades; while others will ensure their buildings are more accessible and energy
efficient," he said.
“This funding will make our towns and villages better places to live, work, and raise a family. This funding is aimed at the heart of our communities in Laois, and I look forward to seeing the completed works”, concluded Deputy Aird.

Fianna Fáil Deputy Sean Fleming also welcomed this news.
"These grants will help the 11 centres in Laois fund refurbishment, upgrading of facilities, roof and floor repairs, solar PV panels, upgrading of kitchens, window replacements, insulation works, and heating systems," Deputy Fleming said.
"These very substantial grants will help ensure these improvements works can go ahead as quickly as possible. I especially want to thank all the voluntary committees involved in these community centres for their ongoing work to improve facilities for their local communities.
"Community Centres are the lifeblood of our local communities, it is important that they be maintained to the highest standard.
"The new Programme for Government ensures this new Community Investment Fund will provide a rolling fund to upgrade and refurbish local community centres on an ongoing basis," Deputy Fleming finished.

"All of these halls started to support the local areas in days gone by, the money in Rathdowney will go towards interior insulation and rewiring, the hall is in need of upgrades," Cllr John King told
the Leinster Express / Laois Live.
"There are new windows and a new roof on the building, so this work should bring it up to a very high standard."
The funding will go towards upgrading the bathroom facilities in the Hawthorn Sports Complex, along with other works.
"All of these centres are used regularly, they are vital for a town in holding events and catering towards the community. There are classes and workshops held in them for people of all ages and all nationalities, these centres are used more now than they were years ago," Cllr King said.

"In Rathdowney, the two main things it was used for was the pantomime and the bingo, but now there is something on in the centre almost every night. We need to modernise the buildings.
"I am delighted it is coming to the area, and the more that comes the better," Cllr King finished.
