World War I
Well known Mountmellick man, Ger Lynch, will present a talk on ‘Mountmellick and the Great War’ in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, 19 June at 8.30pm. Ger is a popular community activist in his home town and was last year selected as Laois Person of the Year. His insight into Mountmellick’s deep involvement in WW1 should be very interesting and all are welcome. The talk is part of the annual programme of talks organised by Laois Heritage Society. SALE OF WORK AND BAKE SALE
A mega bake sale, sale of work and raffles will be held in the Owenass Hall on Sunday June 22 from 11am to 4pm to raise funds for Ben & Jake Connolly who suffer from a very rare illness ‘Allan Herndon Dudley Syndrome’. Raffle items include trailer loads of turf and blocks. Tickets €2 per strip or €5 for 3.

LAOIS MONSTER DRAW
The last draw took place on Friday June 6. Congratulations to Michael Walsh Derryguile winner of the 2nd prize of €5000. The club thanks all who supported this draw.
Well done to all the children who completed the library’s non-fiction reading challenge. Presentation of certificates followed by a story-time took place on Wednesday June 12. Next up is the summer reading challenge called ‘Mythical Maze’ which starts on July 1. All you have to do is sign up, read 6 books of you own choosing and you will receive your Mythical Maze chart with a wristband and stickers throughout the summer.
Freetrade Ireland website promotion is on Wednesday June 18 from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. This is a unique public service allowing you to pass on and pickup items free of charge. If you would like to find out more about this initiative call into the library on the June 18.
Well done to all our young musicians who took part in the recent Junior Feis in the ICA Hall. There was great entertainment for all present. Thank you to the musicians who played during the part of the evening when medals were presented to Mary T Culleton, Agnes Conroy and Mary B Culliton in honour of their work in promoting the Irish language in the community. Be alert also for texts calling all the grupaí cheoil musicians (u12, u15 and u18) to practice as they are all playing in the Leinster Fleadh in Moate next month. Also going to Moate are Niamh O’Connor (concertina), Maeve Áine Ní Dhúfaigh (harp), Fiachra Ó C-Fionnghaill (mandolin and comhrá), Alanah Ní Chonaire (harp), Derbhla Ní Ghiolla Phádraig (duet with Niamh), Deirbhile and Líadan Ní C-Fhionnghaill (comhrá).
