Abbeyleix Bog

Abbeyleix Bog Project Ltd will hold its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 12 May at 7.30 pm in the Abbeyleix Heritage House.  All welcome.

Laois Fleadh

Laois Fleadh Ceoil, organised under the auspices of Spink CCÉ will be held at Abbeyleix from May 30 to June 1. This will be a festive occasion in the town. Thanks to the Management and staff of St Mary’s Primary school all competitions will take place at the Ballyroan road venue. Competition entries to Fleadh Sec Lawrence Vesey close on April 30, non members of Comhaltas are very welcome to compete and should contact for further information.

Bealtaine Art

Over the month of May in Abbeyleix Day Care Centre in the afternoons, Bealtaine will be celebrated. Organised by the Arts Office, artist Anne Holland will give a series of weekly creative art workshops for patients and out-patients. Anne Holland is a visual artist with ten years experience working in the community. The programme will include ceramics, mosaic, photography and mono printing. On Tuesday May 20, in Gort na nOir, Abbeyleix from 1.30pm - 2.30pm, the Abbeyleix Active Retirement Group will hold a Lets Dance Event with dance tutor Maureen Culleton. Performing a selection of sequence dances from the Irish and Scottish dance traditions. Invitation only.


On Thursday May 22 in Abbeyleix Library from 6pm - 7.15pm, people can clebrate the Bealtaine Festival in the Library with a show entitled ‘The Good Old Days’. All are Welcome to this event.

Abbeyleix Library

From April 29 - May 30 Spink Comhaltas will hold an exhibition of photos, trophys etc as part of their hosting the Laois Fleadh Cheoil. Juvenile Chess Club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. Our Knitting Club takes place each Wednesday, 10.30 and 12.30pm.


The 3rd fun run/walk takes place this Wednesday May 7 at 7:30 in Cullohill. This is the next one in the series to help those who would like to reach their 10k goal. The distance is 7k and all walkers/runners are welcome. Reg takes place in the Community Hall from 6:30 with refreshments following. There are prizes for the 1st 3 male/female home with plenty of spot prizes to be won after. Check the Ballyroan, Abbyeleix & District AC Facebook page for more details.


There will be a family table quiz in aid of Scoil Mhuire building fund on Wednesday May 7 at 7pm. This is a family quiz and the School hope to get pupils and parents/guardians participating on each team. Team of 4 costs €15 and requires that at least one adult be a member of each team. Questions will be set for both adult and pupil audience. Entries will be taken on the night. With spot prizes and a table prize to be won for the winners, a great night is guaranteed for adults and children alike. All support will be greatly received. Can your family beat the quizmaster.

Summer Market

The Sunday Market at Heritage House is proving popular with great feedback from traders and shoppers alike. Next market is Sunday May 18 so come along, chat to the friendly traders and pick up some local food or crafts. Contact: 0852824022 / 0852824023 for stalls.

De Vesci House

The ever popular Open day at De Vesci Estate Abbeyleix is on Saturday July 20 this year. This is always a wonderful day out for the family to explore the hidden beauty of the grounds. More details to follow nearer the date
