Comhaltas is organising a trip to Brú Ború in Cashel on Tuesday July 1 departing Mountmellick at 6.30pm returning around midnight. Mass for members and deceased members was celebrated in ICA House on Wednesday May 21 by Fr Noel Dunphy. Special remembrance was extended to the Westman and Droney families on the loss of Kathleen Westman and Peggy Droney. A lovely tea was provided by the Guild. Next Guild meeting is on Wednesday June 11 at 8.30pm.


The council received the 14th Gradam Award on Saturday May 10 in St Francis Zavier Church Dublin. Pauric Scully of Lord Edward St was the recipient. Ciorcal comhrá (Irish conversation group) meets in the library on Thursday mornings from 10am to 1pm. All ages and levels welcome for a friendly chat ‘as Gaeilge’.

Mountmellick United Football Club’s AGM is on Saturday June 7 at 7pm at Conor Davis Park. The previous season will be reviewed and officers and committee elected for next season. All welcome.


A sale of work and bake sale and raffles will be held in the Owenass Hall on Sunday June 22 from 11am to 4pm to raise funds for Ben & Jake Connolly who suffer from a very rare illness ‘Allan Herndon Dudley Syndrome’.


Clonohill Gardens annual charity open day is on Sunday June 8 from 1pm to 7pm in aid of Laois Hospice and the new Solas Bhride Centre. Plant sales and afternoon tea available. In the 1.5 acre garden are woodland, lawns, herbaceous borders and a walled garden overlooking the lake. Clonohill Gardens are on the Laois Garden Trail and have featured on TV and in the Irish Garden magazine and various print media. Clonohill Gardens are off the old Dublin/ Limerick Rd .R445 ( formerly N7) between Mountrath and Borris in Ossory. The death occurred on Saturday May 17 in Leeds of Julia Barcoe (née Lee) of Harbour Court and formerly of The Rock. Julia was predeceased by her husband Daniel. Remains reposed in Moloney’s Funeral Home from Saturday May 24 until removal to St Joseph’s Church on Sunday morning. Requiem mass was celebrated at 9am with burial afterwards to Skeoughvosteen cemetery Kilkenny. The sympathy of the community is extended to Julia’s family Ann, Raymond, Brigid, Bernie, Martin and Julie, brother Paddy, sisters Chris and Peggy, relatives and friends.


The death occurred on Sunday May 25 at St Vincent’s Hospital of Tom Walsh of Chapel Street and formerly of Castlepollard, Westmeath. Remains reposed at his residence with removal to St Joseph’s Church on Wednesday morning. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. Among the many guards of honour at the removal and funeral were The Heath GAA, Clonad GAA, Mountmellick Credit Union, PTAA and Macra na Feirme, all testament to Tom’s wide involvement in the community. The sympathy of the community is extended to Tom’s wife Eileen, son Barry, daughters Anne-Marie, Edel and Emer, brothers Sean and Vincent, relatives and friends.
