Pilates classes will commence on Tuesday January 15 in the Castle Arms Hotel from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. this is a ten week course and it costs eighty euro. As places are limited it is essential to book by contacting Margaret at 0868547710.


The parish lotto with a jackpot of €4,900 was not won in the first draw after Christmas, small winners were €30 Peadar Lennon, €25 Robbie Dempsey and €20 James Joyce. The lotto of January 21 will be held in the Dec’s Bar with a possible jackpot of €5,200. Tickets must be handed in before 9.30pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot. A meeting of Durrow IFA will be held in the Presentation Centre on Thursday January 24 at 8pm. Guest speaker on the night will be Paul Delaney, county tillage chairman. Also present on the night will be County Chairman Pat Hennessey. Please make a special effort to attend this meeting. Tickets for the Annual County IFA Dinner Dance are available from the committee. the Dinner Dance will be held on Friday night January 25 in the Manor Hotel Abbeyleix. All are welcome to attend both events


The Killermogh Parish next Whist Drive will be held in the Parocial Hall, Cork road, Durrow on January 24 at 8 pm. All are welcome to attend.


Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers held their Annual General Meeting in Durrow Inn on Friday night January 4. It was well attended. The following officers were elected for the coming season. Chairman; Philip Kearney, vice-chairman; Tommy Coffey, Hon Sec; Mick Walsh, assistant do; Pat Dunphy, Hon Treasurer; Oliver Lawlor, PRO Martin Lawlor

Committee; Ian Drennan, Brendan Sheppard, Niall Donohue, Alan Dwyer and Simon Dwyer, Weigh Master; Brian Lynch, Ass Weigh-Master; Oliver Lawlor. In competition for this season the weigh-master decision is final. No farm trout allowed to be weighed-in in competitions. The club wish to thank everyone who supported them in the past year and they wish everyone a healthy and peaceful new year. The first competition of the season will be held on Sunday January 20 for the Brendan Sheeran Memorial Cup and it will be a pike competition. All members will receive a text with full details of this competition in the coming week. All members are asked to sell Lotto tickets each week as this is an important source of revenue for the club


Kilkenny campus of NUI, Maynooth, College Road, Kilkenny invite 6th Students, Feetac and mature students (23+) from the Durrow area to take their first year Degree Course in Kilkenny Campus and their 2nd and 3rd year in Maynooth. St Patrick’s weekend

Durrow Development Forum open the St Patrick’s Weekend with a children Disco in the CYMS hall from 5pm to 7pm on March 16. The 17th will open with a huge open air market with loads to see and buy. A “Rewed” up parade at 3pm with no restriction on vehicle type ( other than no HGVS), motorised or non motorised its up to you but this year in celebration of the Gathering we want it to be the best parade in years. We urge all local business, clubs, originations, playgroups, schools to get involved and make the parade a great event for all the locals and visitors.


With over 40,000 daffodils planted on the entrances to the town Durrow should look very well in late spring with a host of golden daffodils. The Ballagh Challenge

South Laois Tourism in conjunction with Ossory Cycle club, Laois Partnership, Laois Sports Partnership, Kilkenny Trails and Laois County Council supported by Cycling Ireland clubs will hold a 100km Cycle tour - The Ballagh Challenge on Sunday June 16. The route traverses through the following towns and villages - Cullahill, Rathdowney, Ballacolla, Ballinakill, Castlecomer, Ballyragget, Lisdowney, Gathabawn and Durrow. A 40km tour will also be included. Starting time for the 100km will be at 10am from Durrow with registration at 9am.

Little Christmas walk

South Laois Tourism would like to thank all who supported their annual Little Christmas Walk on Sunday January 6 also to Dec”s Bar for providing refreshments and entertainment afterwards. Proceeds from the event go to help fund the running of South Laois Tourism office.
