A Laois group of sixth year students enjoyed a fantastic trip to Florence, as part of their art history course.

The visit gave students the chance to see firsthand the early and high renaissance works they have been studying in their classes, and to connect with the city where the renaissance began.

The Heywood CS leaving cert class travelled to Florence in the first weekend of March, visiting a variety of galleries and architectural feats.

"One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the famous Uffizi Gallery," the school told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"Here, students saw some of the most well-known works of Renaissance art, including Primavera and The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, as well as works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti."

Another unforgettable moment was visiting the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michelangelo’s famous sculpture David up close.

Students also viewed the powerful frescoes by Masaccio and were particularly impressed by the sculptures in the beautiful Medici Chapel.

"While exploring the galleries, students brought along their own sketchpads. They used them to sketch details from the artworks and jot down notes and observations, helping them really engage with what they were seeing," the school explained.

"The trip wasn’t just about museums. Students also got to explore the incredible architecture and views that Florence has to offer.

"They climbed Brunelleschi's Dome high above the city, and later made their way up to Piazzale Michelangelo to watch the sunset over Florence while enjoying the lively atmosphere and music in the square," staff said.

There was also plenty of time to explore the city itself. Students wandered across the historic Ponte Vecchio, browsed vintage markets and the bustling Mercato Centrale, and visited Florence’s famous leather markets.

Students sampled a range of Italian dishes in local restaurants, tried different treats and delicacies, and relaxed in Florence’s sunny squares with gelato while taking in the sights of the city.

The trip was led by art teacher Sharon Webster, with the support of fellow staff member Valerie Case, and it proved to be a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

"Overall, the trip was a great success and a hugely valuable opportunity for the students," the school highlighted.

"Being able to see these famous artworks and buildings in person will be a big help as they prepare for their Leaving Certificate Art History exam in June. It was an unforgettable few days filled with art and culture," they finished.
