"We had a very successful launch night of the Clonaslee St Patrick’s day parade last Friday," committee member Paul Flanagan told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

The parade will see six individual cash prizes of €150 for floats across several categories, including best vintage, best dressed dog, most original, most entertaining, best club and best school.

"On top on this there we be an overall cash prize of €600 for the best overall float," Mr Flanagan explained.

There will be something for everyone on the day, with music and street entertainment promising to be fun for the whole family.

Entries in the parade must meet at Clonaslee Community centre from 11am in St Patrick's Day.

Last year's parade was a roaring success, with the winning 1975 Laois hurling team appointed grand marshalls for the parade, 50 years on from their win.

Last year also saw the parade committee presented with a famous set of bagpipes belonging to the legendary piper, Frank Dunne.

Frank Dunne was a prominent member of the Laois Brigade of the Old IRA who was buried with full military honours in Clonaslee in September 1979. Frank's best-known relatives were the late RTÉ sports journalist Mick Dunne and his daughter is the now retired RTÉ newsreader Eileen.
