Described in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as "a significant landmark", the house was built in about 1830.
It is located on the N80 Mountmellick road, facing the recently renovated Dunnes Stores shopping centre.
It retains many original features: a Gibbsian surround doorcase, sometimes referred to as 'block and start' is a common regional detail also found in Church Street in Portlaoise. The house has a slate roof, cast-iron rainwater goods, timber sash windows, a front door dating to 1890 with a fanlight, limestone front steps, a stonewalled front garden and wrought-iron railings. Inside it has original timber floors and doors, original fireplaces, timber window shutters and an impressive staircase.
A year ago, Laois County Council gave permission to convert the house into two one bedroom apartments, and to knock most of a stone carriage mews and build a two storey apartment block behind it with a further six apartments of two and one bedrooms.
The planning permission is for eight Apartments, 10 car parking spaces, 16 bike spaces, a bin store shed and outdoor play area.
