WATCH Laois music stars feature in St Patrick's Day weekend TV special

Music Generation Laois musicians on TG4

Young Laois musicians feature in a special St Patrick's Day weekend special on TG4 with counterparts from around Ireland.

Laois members of Music Generation Laois, which is headquartered in Portlaoise, feature in a documentary filmed during Galway Tradfest in November 2024 as part of the Music Generation Trad Collective.

The Lé Cheile concert showcased the Collective performing together for the first time. Apart from Laois, it brought together young talent from Music Generation groups in Galway, Waterford, Kerry and Wicklow.

The Laois musicians featured have come through the Music Generation Laois Trad Programme. It features whole-class and small group tuition in school settings, tuition in Laois Music Centre, intermediate trad group, trad orchestra, harp ensembles, and the harp orchestra. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

There's another Laois connection to the initiative and the show. Galway native Eric Cunningham is the Music Generation Galway County’s Music Development Officer and was the producer and musical director of the west of Ireland event which staged the collective's debut.

He is a brother of Laois Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) Chief Executive Joe Cunningham who lives in Ratheniska. The LOETB supports Music Generation Laois.

Music Generation Laois is part of Music Generation – Ireland’s National Music Education Programme, initiated by Music Network and co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds together with, The Department of Education and Local Music Education Partnerships.

Locally, Music Generation Laois is part of Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (lead partner) and supported by Laois County Council.
