Constant flow of Laois voters in Abortion Referendum

Abortion referendum turnout returns from Laois have revealed a constant flow of voters to Portlaoise and very busy voting in Rathdowney.

Samples taken at 3pm on Wednesday showed turnouts of 21% and 24% at two polling booths at the county's biggest polling station in Laois - the Holy Family junior and secondary schools.

The Leinster Express observed a constant stream of traffic to the Holy Family schools in Portlaoise on Sunday afternoon, as seen in our video.

Figures from the office of the Laois returning officer from south of the county  in - Rathdowney - reveal a turnout of up to 27%. The sample was taken about 4pm.

The lunchtime average for Laois was reported to 18%.

Polling stations opened at 7am and will close at 10pm. Voting is set get busier after people finish work and commuters return from jobs in Dublin and elsewhere. 

Voters are being asked whether they wish to retain or remove the 8th amendment which enshrines the right to life of the unborn in the Constitution.
