Depeche Mode to the classics from Bohemian quartet in Laois

Laois Midlands Science Week event takes place in Portlaoise Library
Midlands Science Week 2026 in Laois features a musical element with a classical twist in Portlaoise Library that promises to include a sprinkling of science.
Midlands Science and the Bohemian Strings Quartet are set to perform a range of popular tunes, movie themes and classical hits with MC Claire O’Connell, a science communicator and music fan on Monday, November 9.
This event is part of Midlands Science Festival for Science Week, supported by Research Ireland and kindly hosted by Laois Library Service.
“Between tunes, we’ll hear a little about why we all love music so much, what happens in our brain when we listen to music and how we can use music to help us when we are feeling stressed. So come along to this free concert and learn a little about the science of music, while you sing along with your favourite tunes,” say the organisers.
Bohemian Strings have performed with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Mick Flannery, Richard Clayderman and many more. This event explores the science of music and will include classic hits from the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Depeche Mode, the score from the Mission and some classical favourites.
The quartet members say they are dedicated to bringing a vibrant, contemporary edge to the classical tradition.
“Our ensemble blends years of professional mastery with a fresh, modern repertoire, ensuring your event has a soundtrack that is as unique as it is elegant. From timeless masterpieces to reimagined modern hits, we provide the perfect atmospheric backdrop for any event across Ireland,” they say.
Midlands Science Week aims to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, career awareness, and public engagement for all ages—from young children to older adults.
The concert on November 9 runs from 1pm to 2.30 pm.
