Approval has been given for the expansion of the cattle mart in Ballykilleen, despite an objection lodged by a rival mart owner.
Leinster Co Operative Marts Limited lodged a planning application to extend the seating/bidding area at their mart. Manager Mr JP Walsh said the plan is to achieve a “more comfortable, accessible and safer viewing area to meet the requirements of an active but in fairness middle aged to elderly farmer attendance”.
Mr Walsh said the company plan to include a farm hardware shop on site, which should deal with the issue of unregulated trading as at present van traders arrive unannounced on sale days.
An objection was lodged against the plans by Mr Robert Jacob, Old Derrig, Killeshin Road, Carlow.
Mr Jacob said: “I am running a similar business less than one mile from the mart premises. In the present economic climate I feel that such a business being placed in such close proximity will have serious adverse effects on my income.”
However, the council have granted Leinster Co Operative Marts Ltd permission.
