World War I memorial unveiled in Mountrath Peace Garden on Armistice centenary

Mountrath was among the towns around Laois that mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I on the centenary of Armistice Day on Sunday, November 11.

The Mountrath Historical Society organised commemoration featured the unveiling of a plaque remembering 44 local people who died.

The plaque was erected at The Peace Garden on the Link Road.

Michael Hetherington, great-grandnephew of Richard Hetherington, and Evelyn O'Connor niece of Lance Cpl Peter McKenna, jointly laid a wreath to their relatives who died in the four-year conflict.

Photographer Alf Harvey covered the event for the Leinster Express.
