Irish troubadour to be honoured at Laois festival

Irish troubadour to be honoured at Laois festival

John Spillane performs with Music Generation Laois.

The Laois Power of Words Festival is delighted to announce John Spillane as the recipient of this year’s ‘Living Poets Society Award’.

A native of Cork, John, who is performing at this year's festivities in Abbeyleix, is a musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller, poet and according to the festival organisers dreamer.

Rooted in people, place and story, they say his music transports the listener and his live performances captivate audiences around the world. His songs are known for magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent humour. John has the ability to charm, mesmerise and entertain in equal measure.

No stranger to Laois, Spillane recorded 100 Snow White Horses, as the title track of his album released in 2021. It was inspired by the Cork singer's travels around Ireland. The title track harked back to the Kings of Laois.

The Power of Words Festival founder, Amanda Kelly, said the festival continues to delight in celebrating Ireland’s ‘Living Poets’ and the Cork man is the latest addition to the roll of honour.

"Far too often, we celebrate people when they’ve passed.  We are delighted to honour and celebrate the work of some of our greatest poets while we are lucky enough to still have them with us," she said.

’ Amanda continues: "John is a poet of the highest calibre, who embodies the essence of poetry, magical thought and storytelling in his music. He reflects and connects with people in the deepest way, through his words, music and wonderful sense of humour. His words truly dance as he sings them".

Previous recipients of the award include Pat Ingoldsby, Rita Ann Higgins and Maebh McGuckian.  John Spillane is, as described by Folk Radio UK, ‘a poet of song’. MORE BELOW LINK.

John will be presented with his award in the Community Gardens, Abbeyleix on Sunday afternoon of Sunday, August 20. A range of musicians, singers and readers will perform his work. All are welcome. John will remain in Abbeyleix for the rest of the evening as he performs a sold-out show in the intimate surroundings of Preston House.
