The wait is over as Penneys in Laois about to double in size

The Penneys clothing giant has confirmed an exciting update for Laois shoppers.

Their Portlaoise store, the only one in Laois and Offaly, is about to double in size, nicely on time before Christmas.

The company has been quietly carrying out a major overhaul of the store in Laois Shopping Centre since last September, following planning approval for a 2,874 m² size store. 

Workers have been carrying out construction on adjoining empty units in Laois shopping centre, which have been incorporated to double the size of Penneys.

It will open during the week of December 15 to 19, a Penneys spokesperson has confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

After that, refurbishment will begin the existing store, with a full grand opening in early 2026.

"Works on the newly extended part of the Portlaoise store will be ready next week, but we still have full redevelopment works to do on the existing store which will start in the new year. The store will remain open throughout the works.

"We are working towards a full re-opening / relaunch event in Spring next year. 

"We have the same Penneys range across all our stores, but there will be more options on offer as it will be double the size," the spokesperson said.

The expansion has also created more jobs, with the number to be confirmed. Penneys stated when first receiving planning approval for the expansion in 2020 that it would require some 90 more staff.
