Plans lodged to extend Laois quarry

Planning permission sought from Laois County Council to extend the extraction area of Ballyadams Quarry
A planning application has been lodged with Laois County Council to extend a quarry currently operating in the county.
Roadstone Landholding is seeking permission to extend its extraction area of Ballyadams Quarry into agricultural land to the south of the existing quarry.
Ballyadams Quarry produces a variety of products, including a range of aggregates, Readymix concrete and aggregate plant / lime.
The proposed development covers an area of 5.1 hectares, 2.1 hectares of which will be used to carry out rock extraction by industry standard drilling and blasting, followed by additional processing through mobile crushing and screening. The remaining land within the application area will facilitate the boundary development in the form of landscaped berms, native woodland, haulage ramp, security fences, access routes and safety buffers.
The applicant said the proposed development “does not seek an increase to existing traffic or production volumes at Ballyadams Quarry but rather seeks access to quality aggregates within the Landholding.

“The proposed development will be subject to a restoration plan, which aligns with the existing permitted restoration plan for Ballyadams Quarry, and includes a waterbody, native woodland, with quarry faces retained to provide suitable habitat for nesting birds.”
The applicant also states that the development would not change the HGV movements to or from the site. They said the existing infrastructure of the quarry (offices, welfare facilities, wheel-wash, weighbridge, etc.) will not be affected by this application and will continue to service the expanded quarry.
A planning permission of 20 years is being sought and the application proposes to extract around 905,000m3 of aggregates throughout its lifetime.
An Environmental Impact Assessment Report (‘EIAR’) is being submitted as part of the application.
Submissions can be made by the public to Laois County Council up until December 6, 2026 with a decision due by council planners by January 5, 2027.
