Gardai in Rathdowney have saved Christmas after 'arresting' the Grinch who was in town on Thursday.

While attending the turning on of the Christmas lights in Rathdowney on Thursday, Gardai spotted the Grinch trying to stop Santa spreading Christmas cheer, a statement read.

Children cheered and were delighted to see that the Grinch was "swiftly taken into custody and he is no longer able to ruin Christmas for everyone."

Gardaí in Laois also issued "a big thanks to our Little Blue Heroes, Honorary Garda Harry Hoare (HG262) for switching on the lights."

They added: "Well done to Rathdowney Christmas Lights, Rathdowney Community Development Group and everyone involved for a lovely evening."
