A Portarlington family will take on Ireland's Fittest Family on RTÉ

A Laois nurse is set to battle it out on RTÉ’s Ireland's Fittest Family this weekend.

The Muwaniri family will vie for one of the three places up for grabs in the next round of the competition in the historic Haulbowline Navy Base.

Mum Rudo is a 65 year old nurse living in Portarlington who loves to run. She finds running is a great stress reliever and she has run several half-marathons and two full marathons.

She is very excited to be taking part with her two sons Ozmond (or Oz) and Solly and grandson Jaden.

Jaden, Oz’s son, is in 5th year in secondary school and used to play a lot of football but in the last year has been focusing on school. He wants to get back into football and has continued to keep fit.

Oz, aged 42, is a Pastor at L15 church in Galway. He lives in Clarecastle and can’t wait to compete with his son Jaden, his Mam and his brother. Oz is also a runner and used to play rugby. He is very passionate about fitness and keeping fit.

Brother Solly is the one who signed up the family. He currently lives in Amsterdam but loves the show and convinced them all that they should take part. Solly is a personal trainer and runs his own fitness company Famba Fitness.

This year on Ireland's Fittest Family the events are demonstrated by members of the Irish Navy. The families must each take on a new twist, Raft Rage. Starting in the cold naval basin, this is a head-to-head race finishing with a rope climb from the sea onto an enormous Naval Patrol Ship.

The four families then have their stamina tested by Drill Down. Based on punishing Navy drills, the family have to take turns to tackle a leg of the course proving their strength and agility.

With the scores of the first two events combined, the two highest-scoring families go through to the next round, and the two families at the bottom have to face off in the Navy Eliminator.

The Muwaniri family will be joined by the Gibson family from Donegal while the Treacy family from Tipperary and the Healy family from Cork also feature in this week’s episode.

Episode Two of Ireland's Fittest Family screens on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player at 6.30pm this Sunday, November 8.
