Incident occurred in the vicinity of busy filling station.
Laois gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident in which it's alleged that a knife was produced in a threatening manner in Mountmellick.
Gardaí confirmed that officers in the town responded to a report from a member of the public claims of the threat being made in the vicinity of a filling station off the N80 in the Irishtown area on the Portlaoise side of the town. The call was received around 6 pm on Monday, November 28.
A car was subsequently stopped by gardaí. A search was conducted but no knife was found. Gardaí are looking to speak to another individual who was in the vicinity a the time of the alleged incident.
Further investigations are underway and CCTV is likely to be examined. Gardaí dismissed rumours that have been circulating in the town that there was a robbery or an attempted robbery from the filling station.
The incident occurred just an hour after a man died on the Tullamore side of the town after being knocked down by a lorry at a filling station.
The deceased man was named locally as Seamus O'Riordain.
