Gardaí investigating an assault causing harm at Laois prison release men

Garda also provide update on the investigation into death of Tadhg Farrell and aunt in Edenderry

Four men detained by Laois Offaly gardaí have been returned to jail as the investigation into an assult at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.

In an update on Friday evening, November 12, Garda Headquarters said the four males who were arrested as part of this investigation had been released without charge.

A statement issued to the Leinster Express / Laois Live said the four males had returned to Midlands Prison. It added that investigations are ongoing.

Gardaí previously said that they were investigating all the circumstances of an assault causing harm, which is alleged to have taken place in the Midlands Prison on December 6.

The four men were arrested on the morning of December 12 by Gardaí from the Serious Crime Unit in the Laois/Offaly Garda Division. The four were aged in their 20s and 30s.

All were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Garda Stations in the Garda Eastern Region.

Meanwhile, Gardaí said they are investigating all the circumstances of a fatal house fire at a house in Castleview Park, Edenderry on Saturday, December 6.

The Garda said they searched three homes in Co Kildare and Co Offaly on December 12 but were not releasing the results of these searches for operational reasons.

Gardaí said they continue to appeal to anybody with any information on the "violent fatal incident" to speak with investigating Gardaí.

Tadhg Farrell aged 4, and his aunt Mary Holt died in the fire, which gardaí believe was started maliciously.
