Figures produced in the Dail show a quarter of Garda vehicles in Laois are over six years old and half the fleet is over four years old.
The figures were provided to Sinn Fein Justice Spokesman, Matt Carty TD, in a recent Parliamentary Question.
Deputy Carthy asked the Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan about the age profile of the Garda fleet in each district within Laois/Offaly Division.
Minister O’Callaghan stated that the purchase and allocation of vehicles by An Garda Síochána is made on the basis of identified operational demands, the availability of resources and is reviewed on a continual basis.
He provided a breakdown of the number and approximate age of the vehicles across the Laois Offaly Garda Division as of December 31, 2025.
It revealed the majority of Garda vehicles were based out of Portlaoise where the Laois Offaly Garda Headquarters is located. In total there were 49 vehicles in Portlaoise, 23 in Tullamore and 10 based at Birr.

“All vehicles are operated up to the manufacturers durability limits or uneconomic repair, irrespective of age. A comprehensive Service Repair and Maintenance programme is in place to ensure that all vehicles are operating to manufacturers specifications,” Minister O’Callaghan said.

He said An Garda Síochána publishes detailed information on the Garda fleet from 2008 to date, including a Divisional monthly breakdown. Monthly fleet reports are currently available from 2020 to November 2025 and are publicly available on the Garda website.
