Laois family victim of house raid by gang

Gardaí in Laois are investigating a break-in at a house near Portlaoise in which a local businessman and his family were threatened by masked raiders.

UPDATE: Sledgehammers used in 'vicious' attack in Laois.

It is understood that four men dressed in black broke into a house in the Shaen area off the Portlaoise to Portarlington road.

The incident took place around 10 pm last night, Tuesday, March 26.

During the incident, the family was threatened and children were in the house at the time.

Gardaí believe that visitors to the house disturbed the raiders who then fled on foot through fields.

Gardaí sent out a text alert on Tuesday night to people in Shaen and nearby Emo.

The property is owned by a businessman who runs a well-known shop in Portlaoise town centre.

Garda asked that for anyone with information to contact Portlaoise Garda Station (057) 867 4100.
