The man allegedly burgled a neighbouring house before attacking the garda station

A man allegedly burgled a house and stole a hammer which he then used to smash the windows of a nearby Garda station.

Hugh Nevin (27) of 7 Oak Park, Portlaoise is accused of burgling a house at Wolfe Tone Street, Mountmellick, stealing a hammer valued at €50, possession of an orange and black coloured hammer, trespass and criminal damage to Mountmellick Garda Station on April 24, 2026. It is alleged the man smashed three windows including the glass pane of the front door of the station.

He appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court where Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby gave an outline of the allegation.

Sgt Kirby said Gardaí had received a call to say a male had entered a property on Wolf Tone Street in Mountmellick without the owner’s consent and had gone upstairs at 9.30pm on April 24.

The man was spotted by the owner of the house who had ordered him out of the property, Sgt Kirby explained.

He said it would be alleged the homeowner had observed the man “going over the wall into the curtilage of the Garda station where he was witnessed with a hammer smashing the windows of the station”.

Judge Andrew Cody remanded the man on bail and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on July 20 for submissions on jurisdiction.
