The late Will Sherlock in action with Portlaoise Rugby Club.
The death has taken place of a Laois man who played important roles in his community over his short lifetime, both in his job as a prison officer and in sport.
Flags at Portlaoise Prison are flying at half mast in honour of William (Will) Sherlock from Eyne, Portlaoise, died peacefully on Monday, May 22, after a long illness, aged in his 40s.
Portlaoise Rugby Club announced the death.
"It was with great sadness and a feeling of great loss that we, as a club, heard the news this morning Will Sherlock had passed away. In every sense of the word, Will was a larger than life character who will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace".
Park Ratheniska GAA Club is among the many groups and individuals sending tributes.
"The deepest sympathies of all at Park Ratheniska GAA Club to the Sherlock family on the incredibly sad passing of Will. We had the pleasure of having Will play gaelic with the club for a number of years, and while another giant of a man Joe Ramsbottom moulded him into an effective target man, his talents were always most notable with the oval ball.
"But the outstanding take away from Will was his absolute decency and generousity. A giant, but a gentle and kind giant. He will be sadly missed by all but most of all by his loving family. We pass on our deepest sympathies to Kelen, Ella, Billy and Leah and all the Sherlock family. May the Portlaoise sod rest lightly upon you Will."
Mr Sherlock passed away in the loving care of the staff at St Brigid's Hospice The Curragh surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his father Mick, Uncle Billy and sister-in-law Brenda.
He was the beloved husband of Helen and devoted father of Ella, Billy, and Leah. The much loved son of Ann, Brother of John, Patrick, Michael, Roseann and Mark. He will be sadly missed by his Aunt Bridie, sisters-in-law Louise, Miriam, Roisin & Una, brothers-in-law Gearóid, Des & Seamus, father and mother in law, Michael and Teresa, nieces & nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends including those in Portlaoise Rugby Club & The Irish Prison Service.
Funeral arrangements will follow.
