New Men's Shed group to form in Laois town

Abbeyleix will see a new Men's Shed group formed this October, with all invited to attend the official launch night.

Group chairman Mr Richard O'Connell highlighted the importance of Men's Shed groups around the country.

"We aim to provide a venue for men to talk and connect with others, while participating in group and or individual
projects," he said.

"It's important to have somewhere for men to meet outside of the pub scene. We want to create opportunities for friendship and socialising, while at the same time providing the space, expertise and facilities for men to pursue hobbies, crafts and creativity," Mr O'Connell said.

A previous attempt to establish a Men's Shed group in Abbeyleix was unsuccessful, as the plan was derailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The idea was reignited last September, with organisers holding preliminary meetings recently.

Mr O'Connell has commended local businesses and people in Abbeyleix for their outstanding support.

"We have had great local support here, we're receiving a lot of help and encouragement," he said.

"We have had businesses offer us spaces, it's all very encouraging. We're delighted now to get it going," Mr O'Connell finished.

The official launch of the Abbeyleix Men's Shed will be held in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on October 17 at 8pm.
