St Brigid’s were crowned Intermediate Camogie champions on Saturday afternoon after a stunning final 20 minutes saw them pull away from Camross. Manager Brian Bowe expressed his delight as their long-term goal, set back in February, became a reality with the county title win.
"It's an unbelievable feeling. We talked about it back in February and this was the plan for the whole year. But when it happens, it's fantastic when it happens. The girls deserve nothing more. They've put in a huge effort all year. You can see the scenes out there, we're over the moon,” Bowe said.
Bowe knew the threat Camross posed, particularly with Aimee Collier playing at full-forward, having scored freely for both club and county this year. St Brigid’s full-back Amy Quinlan was named Player of the Match for successfully limiting Collier’s influence on the game.
"Amy is a fantastic girl. Her confidence may have been down at the start of the year, but she's built and built. That's twice this year now she's marked Aimee and twice she's handled her. We knew if we could get a handle on those top girls, we'd have a right chance here today," Bowe praised.
The manager was also full of admiration for the entire squad, who lifted the Intermediate Championship trophy at Laois Hire O'Moore Park.
“They're exceptional girls. What more can you say about them? You can just see what they did in the second half. They're just an unbelievable bunch of girls from 1 to 28. We have an unbelievable bunch here,” he commented.
Despite Camross taking a two-point lead into halftime after scoring the last three points of the first half, Bowe’s message was to stay composed, knowing his team hadn’t yet hit their stride.
“We said to the girls at half time we weren't going to panic. We knew our girls hadn't got going yet. Maybe that was probably Camross at their best. But we knew if we could get going, once the girls got into stride, we were a very hard animal to stop once the girls started, we were delighted again,” Bowe explained.

St Brigid’s were down by four points with 20 minutes to go, but they unleashed a devastating run, scoring 2-5 without reply from Camross.
"That's what they're doing it all year, we're doing that all year. The last 20 minutes of games were racking up huge scores and we just said on the line that we weren't going to panic. Luckily today it worked out and we're delighted,” Bowe added.
Bowe, who recently starred in Rathdowney-Errill's Junior C triumph, reflected on the challenge of managing from the sidelines.
“I hurled the Junior C final four weeks ago. It's easy to do it there, but when you're here and you want to just get in yourself, it's not easy. They do exactly what we ask them and we can do no more from the side then,” he said.
Looking ahead to the Leinster Intermediate Club Championship, where St Brigid’s will face Myshall in the quarter-finals next weekend, Bowe expressed quiet confidence.
“We had a little one eye on it. But look, we said to the girls one match at a time. I'll tell you one thing, these girls will give Leinster one hell of a rattle,” Bowe concluded.
