Laois LGFA Senior Football Championship semi-finals set for thrilling showdowns
The LOETB Laois LGFA Senior Football Championship reaches a crucial stage this Saturday at Laois Hire O’Moore Park, with four of the county’s top teams set to battle for a place in the final.
Portlaoise, Sarsfields, Ballyroan, and reigning champions St Conleth’s have all shown strong form in the group stages and quarter-finals, setting the scene for two competitive and high-stakes semi-finals that could go down to the wire.
Portlaoise vs Sarsfields – Saturday, September 20, 4pm, Laois Hire O’Moore Park
Last year’s finalists, Portlaoise, face off against Sarsfields in what promises to be a compelling semi-final. Portlaoise have enjoyed significant success in recent years, winning their first-ever Senior title in 2020 and adding two more titles in 2022 and 2023.
The sides met in the group stages, with Portlaoise narrowly edging Sarsfields by a single point thanks to Fiona Dooley’s decisive score. Both teams recorded victories over Park-Ratheniska, while Portlaoise drew with St Joseph’s and Sarsfields overcame the same opposition.
Portlaoise topped Group B with three wins from three and advanced straight to the semi-finals. Sarsfields had to battle through a quarter-final against Timahoe, securing a 7-13 to 2-11 victory in Mountmellick to earn their place. Sarsfields are aiming to reach a final for the first time since 2021, and they will need to overcome a strong Portlaoise side in top form.
Ballyroan vs St Conleth’s – Saturday, September 20, Evening, Laois Hire O’Moore Park
In the other semi-final, Ballyroan will take on reigning champions St Conleth’s. Ballyroan topped Group A with three wins from three, including a crucial 6-6 to 3-9 victory over St Conleth’s in the final round of group games.
St Conleth’s entered that clash with two dominant wins over Shanahoe and Timahoe, scoring 8-30 across their opening two games. The reigning champions then overcame St Joseph’s in a quarter-final last weekend, 2-9 to 2-5, to book their place in the semis.
Both sides have displayed attacking prowess, and this clash promises to be high-quality football as Ballyroan attempt to upset the defending champions again.
