The victorious Portlaoise Golf Club Central Towns Cup team after they defeated Edendery in Tullamore on Sunday afternoon
Portlaoise Golf Club has capped off an incredible campaign by claiming the Central Towns Cup after a dramatic final against Edenderry. The journey to the final had already been impressive, with decisive victories over New Forest Golf Club, Birr Golf Club, Palmerstown House Golf Club, and a commanding 4–1 win in the semi-final against Mullingar Golf Club.
Sunday's final presented a stern test for both sides, with challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and rain, making every shot a real challenge.
The Portlaoise team was led out by Declan Ryan, Roy Glynn, John Farrell, Sandy Cleland, and Shaun Tobin, under the expert guidance of team managers Adrian Kelly and Eoghan Lalor, and team coordinator Paul McEvoy.
The match proved to be a thrilling contest from start to finish. Both sides battled fiercely, trading points and showing tremendous composure under pressure. By the end of regular play, the scores were tied at 2.5–2.5, forcing a playoff to decide the winner.
It all came down to John Farrell, who held his nerve under intense pressure. Farrell executed a superb par to win the decisive hole, securing overall victory for Portlaoise Golf Club.
