Laois homeless figures jump by 20%

35 people were in emergency accommodation provided by the Council last month

56 children recorded as homeless in North East region in latest homeless figures

52 children were recorded as homeless in the midlands region in the latest homeless figures.

The number of people recorded as homeless in Laois last month increased by 20%, according to the latest figures from the Department of housing. 


There were 35 individuals availing of emergency accommodation from the local authority during the week of February 19 to January 25. 


This is up from 29 people recorded as homeless in the county the month previous. 


Across the midlands there were 33 families in local authority emergency accommodation last month. This included 40 adults and 52 children. 


The were 164 adults availing of emergency accommodation across the midlands in February. The majority were aged between 25 to 44 (79). There were 54 people aged between 45 and 64 and there were four people aged over 65 homeless in the region. 


Nationally the number of homeless people in Ireland has hit 13,841, setting a new record.

The latest figures from the Department of Housing show that 9,671 adults and 4,170 children were in emergency accommodation in February.
